I'd settled down after talking with Kyle. I'd just stared out of the window. Watching the scenery and listing to Leon snoring. Jeez, why did he have to be so loud?
Kane was frowning, his eyes shut and his arms crossed. It was hard to tell if he was sleeping or not.
Zen was definitely awake. He was shuffling around restlessly. Even though I kept stroking his soft fur and whispering to him. I sighed and leaned back in my chair.
When I looked up Kyle was jigging about ridiculously in his chair.
"Uh, what're you doing?" I asked cautiously.
Kyle looked up and pulled out a headphone. "Huh?" he grunted.
"Ah," I chuckled in reply. "Listening to music, why am I not surprised? You definitely seem like the type."
"What, you're telling me you don't listen to these?"
"Not really. I've been fighting most of my life and…well- I was too young to use them when Lucifer saved me."
  "Wha-" cried Kyle. Suddenly interested.
So, with Kyle's full attention, I delved into the long and gruesome story that is, my past. I explained all about how my parents were killed and how I'd got my scar. And about how if Lucifer hadn't saved me and Leon, we'd have been killed just like our parents.  And even more about what Zen was and how he came to be.
"Wow, so your life never gets boring then. It sounds a lot more fun-"
"No! No, it's certainly not fun." I interrupted. Then more softly I said continued, "Look, I didn't mean anything by snapping but- sure I love my job as a Guardian. But, I don't know. I think I would've just liked to get to know my parents. Just to know what being a normal person is actually like."
"Oh, sorry. I didn't mean to hurt you." Replied Kyle apologetically. Shifting his eyes to look at the floor.
"No, no, it's ok." I said downheartedly. "I'm just too sensitive. I just prefer to lock the memories like that away in a box." I said stroking the hair that covered my scar.
"Like Pandora's Box? Only with memories, instead of all the bad things in the world?"
"Yeah." I laughed. "Kinda like that." I chuckled.
Leon groaned in his sleep and then continued snoring loudly. So I kicked his foot. No reaction. He slept like a log when he wanted to.
  "So how's your past been?"
"Pretty boring actually compared to you, being completely honest. I only became a Guardian when I was thirteen. So it's been about, three years now. I'd had a pretty normal life before then. School, friends and…care home.
"Care home? Oh…" I trailed off.
"Yeah, mom was single, hooked up with a guy, found she was pregnant with me and the guy left her. She didn't want me, so, she dumped in that dump. I hated it there. You had no privacy. Then, I started doing…things. Things that aren't normal."
  "Your Guardian power?"
"Yeah. They seemed to co-operate with my emotions at first. But as you can imagine, I was terrified. I didn't know what to do. I didn't even collect my things, I just ran. Left it all behind. My friends, my school, my stuff, everything. I didn't know what was happening to me. Luckily, a roaming Guardian found me a month later. Lucky too, I'd found some broken glass on the floor 'cause id been sleeping rough. And, well you know…" he gestured to his wrists.
"Yeah you don't have to go any further if you don't want." I replied sympathetically.
"No, its ok, I don't remember who the Guardian was now. But he was older than me. Probably about Lucifer's age, so probably in his early thirties. And I haven't seen him since he took me training for the next two years. God knows what happened to him." He chuckled slightly to himself, "Heck, for all I know he could have been killed by one of those Lost Soul s."
I changed the subject swiftly, "So, have you met Inigo Erebus?"
"Who the hell has a name like Inigo?" Kyle sniggered.
"The dork that killed my only lead."
  "Dork? Really, you're what fifteen?"
  "Yeah, so?"
"Well I thought you'd be able to cuss better."
"Oh hush." I said flicking his nose. "I don't do it since living with Lucifer. He doesn't like it, and what he says pretty much goes!"
"Ouch." he huffed, clearly ignoring me. "You've got sharp fingers."
"Tell me about it," replied Leon, rubbing his eyes sleepily.
"Good morning, sleepy head." Kyle said. "What about you? Are you awake? Yoo-hoo!" He asked elbowing Kane in the chest.
Kane swatted his arm away grumpily. "Yes, I am awake. And can you please stop poking me?"
"I didn't poke you, I elbowed you." Kyle corrected with a cheeky grin.
  "Oh, grow up." Kane Growled.
"Never going to happen." Kyle retorted.
"Why'd you have to be so obnoxious?" muttered Kane.
"'Cause I wouldn't be me otherwise."
  "That was a rhetorical question."
"Ooh, get Kane and his huge vocabulary." Kyle laughed.
Kane groaned loudly as he got to his feet and shoved his way past Kyle. Kyle looked at him questioningly, "Hey, where are you goin'?" he asked.
"Somewhere you're not." Kane replied as I moved my legs to avoid them being hit.
"Fine, then I get the window seat!" Kyle called shifting to the next empty seat.
I could hear Kane mumbling things under his breath as he stormed away, his hands balled into fists. This was my chance.
"So…how did you and Kane become…colleagues?" I asked quietly.
  "What do you mean?"
"I'll be back in a minute, I need to go-" Leon started.
"Don't need to- or want to- know, thank you very much." I interrupted.
Leon held his hands up in surrender and walked off down the aisles. In the same direction as Kane.
"Anyways, I mean, um… I think what I want to know is, how come you to work with each other? I mean, you two are just so different."
"I cant really remember. I think it was Lucifer that decided it would good if we worked together. I think that's all it is too it."
I looked around before I asked my next question. Just to check Kane wasn't showing any signs of coming back before I got an answer. "Um, there's just something… else that i…wanted…to ask." I trailed off.
"Yeah?" asked Kyle, looking up with wide eyes. "You ok? You seem a little nervous."
"Yeah, yeah, I'm- I'm fine." I replied looking down at the floor and balling my hands into fists. "It's just that, since you work with him, I was wondering whether you knew what Kane-"
"What Kane was?" finished Kyle. "Nah, sorry, I'm like you. Don't have any sort of clue about his background. Or his aura for that matter."
"So he's never told you either?" I asked dejectedly.
"Nope, he never told me. And whenever I tried to ask, he just glared at me and never said anything… to… me." Kyle trailed off. He then exchanged his serious face to a stupidly big (but obviously forced) grin.
I frowned at him but turned around slowly as I heard heavy footsteps behind me. When I saw Kane standing behind me I also exchanged my serious face for a stupidly obvious forced grin. "Hi… Kane." I said awkwardly.
"What were you talking about?" asked Kane seriously.
  "Nothing much." Kyle replied quickly.
"Sure." Kane grumbled, slouching heavily into his non-window seat. He then leant over and muttered to Kyle something along the lines of "You know I don't reveal my past…" the rest I couldn't make out. But it made Kyle's face fall and his skin turn pale. It made my stomach churn just thinking about what Kane might threaten. It made my head spin. God knows what Kane was capable of. One of these days I was definitely going to ask what he was. Just not today…
The train driver called something over the speaker. I wasn't listening. I was squirming under Kane's glare and trying to avoid his dark expression. Note to self, while near to Kane, NEVER go alone.
Leon walked in behind us, his mouth crammed with a sandwich. He tried to smile but stopped immediately when he almost dropped it. I just laughed at him and moved my legs so he could slot back into place.
"Why am I not surprised?" I laughed as Leon juggled three sandwiches, including his own.
He handed me a roast chicken salad sandwich, he then faced Kyle and passed him a cheese sandwich. "Hope you like cheddar." He said in-between chewing his own ham and pickle sandwich. I noticed he didn't pass Kane a sandwich. "You sure you don't want one?" Leon asked Kane.
"Yeah, I'm fine. I'm not hungry."
Come to think about it, I never had seen Kane eat. Did he eat?
I just sighed as I took a small bite out of my own sandwich and discreetly passed a chunk of chicken down to Zen.
"Do you ever stop eating?" I asked with a smile.
